To open DOC documents in linux, I have installed acroread, Abiword, catdoc, mozilla-acroread, mozilla-openoffice.org, okular, okular-extra-backends. You know:

aptitude install acroread Abiword catdoc mozilla-acroread mozilla-openoffice.org okular okular-extra-backends

Before you install these lines in /etc/apt/sources.list. Open a text editor, COPY AND PASTE:

deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ sid main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ sid main contrib non-free

deb http://ftp.fr.debian.org/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.fr.debian.org/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free

deb sid main http://www.debian-multimedia.org/
deb-src http://www.debian-multimedia.org/ sid main

deb http://ftp.debian-unofficial.org/debian/ stable main contrib non-free restricted

deb http://security.debian.org sid / updates main

If the text is on a web page that opens automatically. If this is a text that you downloaded, you can use Openoffice which works with all types of files. It's that easy. Greetings.
